How Much Should I Charge?🤔

When making artwork over a number of years you are bound to sell a few pieces. The first few get given away to family and friends then as you gain confidence in your ability you think about pricing your work. But what would someone be willing to pay? And what price tag do you put on a piece that has taken something out of you? Although cathartic and not to be begrudged, there's the cost of the artist grade materials you have purchased, and your time.

"Don't compare yourself to other artists" we're constantly told, but to be honest the only way I was able to price my work was by looking at other artist's websites and seeing how they priced similar sized pieces. And then multiplying the sizing of the artwork and dividing by two and seeing if I was close.

For example a painting that is 30" x 40"

30 x 40  = £600                                                                                                                  2

This way of pricing was going so well until my work went to auction at Sotheby's and that skewed things when a smaller painting just 18" x 24" made £600

I was prompted to get my work valued, as there are artists commanding a lot more than I was asking.

Thankfully AJ Akoun has slightly over valued my work but I will be keeping my prices as they are, but at least now I can be comfortable in my pricing strategy.
